How to Aim on Slope Dear friends, Happy 46th National Day! Hope every Singaporean have a nice break on 9th Aug. It has been awhile since we wrote SMASH!. We had been busy fitting, researching and building our Wedge Fitting System. Dave Pelz, in his 23 years of studying golfers and compiling data, states that 60% to 65% of all golf shots occur inside 100 yards of the hole. More important, about 80% of the shots golfers lose to par occur inside 100 yards. So to quickly improve on one's score, shouldn't we be looking at improving the golfer's ability within this distance? In Dave's studies of thousands of golfers, at all skill levels, he found that nearly everybody makes almost every putt from inside two feet. Go a little farther away, to three feet, and golfers begin to miss (even Tour pros make only 85% to 95% of their threefooters). Step back to five feet and pros hole about 65%, while amateurs, if they're lucky, are making about 50%. And at six feet, the best in the world, the PGA Tour professionals, sink about 50%, plus or minus 5%. From 10 feet, no one consistently holes better than 25%. And from over 15 feet? One in 10, best case, even for the pros. So if we look at the statistics, we really want to be able to get within 10 feet of the hole. How? The answer is the wedges, pitches, chips, and bunker shots of your short game. This is the motivation behind our Wedge Fitting System. We will reveal more in the next issue when the system is in a more ready state. Let's move on to what's new and follow by an interest finding by David Edel on aiming on slope.

How to aim on slope | |||||||||||||||||

The more we fit, the more doors open for learning. The more we listen and watch the student, the more quickly we can put together an effective model for them to improve. Recently David Edel shared with his students (and that's us) on how to aim on slope. Cool idea and here's how it goes: It is one thing to aim on flat ground, yet another to aim on slope. David has been working a lot with his students with aim patterns on right and left breaking putts. Most players aim high of the intended aim point, and pull/push and or change up speed patterns to get to different lines. Some people aim higher on some breaks and lower on others. This, David believe, has something to do with the perception of creating a sense of parallel-ness to the slope. Meaning, if on flat ground, the ball/eye relationship is fit to a certain location. This relationship will change when the player sets up on slope. On right to left putts, the player will tend to lean backwards, moving the ball outside the original eye position. Just as with the fitting process, when the ball moves outside the eye line, players tend to aim more right, thus creating the higher aim. What the player need to do is lean into the hill to get back to the original eye to ball relationship on flat ground. This affect is opposite on left to right putts. The player leans back into their heels and aim lowers back to the intended aim point. We also use our Aimpoint chart to determine the correct aim point required based on slope and stimp. If you think about it, we rarely get a dead straight putt, so learning how to putt on slope is just as important as learning how to hit an iron shot off of slope. The bodies balance system reacts differently for all people, and set up types will have a huge influence on the bodies tendencies to counter balance the affects of slope. Try it and see what you come up with. we believe you will see some really cool outcomes. |
