Maximising Distance

Dear friends,

First of all, a big Thank You! With our anniversary celebration just around the corner, we want to take a brief moment to thank everyone. Because of your continuous support of the smaller size companies like us, KZG, Swing Science, Edel, Eidolon and other ÒmicrobreweryÓ of golf equipment manufacturers/clubfitters, we can survive in this market dictated by the giants. With your support, golfers are no longer limited to the fancy marketing propaganda with the watered down quality of the large corporations. Golfers have an option to enjoy the performance from the quality equipment of the smaller manufacturers and true professional workmanship of the individuals. With todayÕs technology and your opinion, equipment reviews are no longer dominated over by financial decision, and honest voice can continued to be heard. Because of you and your support, our basic rights of freedom of choice and freedom of speech are exercised in our part of the golf market.

In celebration of our anniversary, we are offering a 20% discount on all shafts for the month of April 2011. The only catch is that you need to be on our mailing list. If you are already reading this, chances is you already are. So spread the words around and get your golf kakis to sign up as well!

Another cause for celebration is the recognistion of our fitting practices. We licensed our fitting practice to Hoo Golf, who operates out of Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort. Clement Hoo, owner, will provide the same level of fitting practice as we have in Wiz Golf. So the next time, you pass by Clearwater in Ipoh, drop by to say hello.

Now letÕs get on with what is new, updates and the subject of maximising distanceÉ

What's new and updates

A) Putting with SAM & Brett (29th Jan 2011)

The event was postponed to 19th Feb due to the rain on 29th Jan. All participants got a hand on the SAM PuttLab to understand their putting stroke a little better and also an hour of "clinic" time with Brett. Here's some pictures of the workshop.

A reminder for those who have yet to respond with your feedback, please do so as this will help determine if more of such workshop will be conducted. * We are considering a chipping or up and down workshop soon :)

B) Wiz Putting Club

We are getting requests to make our technologies available on a membership model so that our friends and customers can use them to improve on their game. So here we are, the first putting club in Singapore, the Wiz Putting Club! Details of the club can be found here. As these are technologies we use for our fitting business, we have to limit the number of members we can take in. So if you are interested, please give us a call or drop us a mail!

Maximising Distance

Being clubfitters, we are in constant contact with professional golfers, coaches and amateurs. And one thing in common is always the quest for more distance. This little section, we will talk a bit on research done by Trackman on maximising distance. With TrackmanÕs technology and studies, hopefully, we can help the golfing population understand why the ball does what it does.

The key to maximising distance:

The optimal combination of ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate needed to maximize driving distance for a particular golfer are primarily dictated by the golferÕs club speed and attack angle.

The reason has to do with a tradeoff between ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate. Distance is maximized with a high ball speed, high launch angle, and low spin rate Ð however, increasing launch angle by increasing the dynamic loft has the side-effect of increasing spin rate and decreasing ball speed. So, a tradeoff must be made, and the optimal tradeoff depends on how an individual delivers the club to the ball. Maximizing ball speed also implies making center impact Ð or at least close to center impactÐ as well squaring up club path and face angle.

As an example, someone with a club speed of 90 mph and an attack angle of -5 degrees would maximize carry distance with a ball speed of 129 mph, launch angle of 11.1 degrees, and spin rate of 3690 rpm. Meanwhile, someone else with the same club speed of 90 mph, but an attack angle of +5 degrees would maximize carry distance with a ball speed of 132 mph, launch angle of 16.4 degrees, and spin rate of 2630 rpm. Note in this example, the golfer who hit up on the ball would end up with more carry: 196 versus 175 meters. Attack angle is really a swing issue. Changing a driver or that shaft without understanding these is not the magical move to gain that extra 20 meters of carry. If it happens, it is by chance. Equipment and swing got to go hand in hand.

Visit your club fitter and they should be able to tell if you are hitting down or hitting up, what happens when your launch angle is decreased or increased by 1 degree, and what head/shaft will get to optimise your drives even if you are not prepared for a swing change.

About Trackman

TrackMan technology has been impacting the golf industry for more than 6 years. From R&D, to club fitting, to instruction and practice, TrackMan has improved the way the golf industry develops equipment, evaluates technique, and measures performance - all benefitting how golfers play the game. During this time, TrackMan with its own research and technology has sought to not only measure the golf swing and the resulting ball flight, but to shed light on some of the mysteries of golf as well: more precisely, why the ball goes where it goes. Backed by cuttingedge analytics, TrackMan has been able to discover, confirm, and/ or quantify several fundamental principles about golf.
