Is it the equipment or me?

Dear friends,

For those who went through our driver/shaft fitting session, you would possibly be familiar with our method of matching shafts to your swing. I.e. matching the weight, butt, mid and tip flex of a shaft to your club path, swing speed, tempo and release. For the benefits of the golfing community, we developed a free online application for everyone to use. You can punch in the numbers and search against our database of around 900 shafts to see which will be a good match for you. Here's the url (http://www.wizgolf.com.sg/shaftmatch/) to sign up and you can start using it after you validate the registration. There is also a faq page (http://www.wizgolf.com.sg/shaftmatch/faq.php) with answers to some questions that you may have. If you don't find the answer to your question there, feel free to drop us a mail and we will be glad to answer them. We don't claim to know everything about shafts, but we will keep trying to be better.

Updates

A) Wiz Lab on IPhone

You may not be aware, other than this SMASH! newsletter that we write, we also keep a blog platform to facilitate posting of short articles about interesting (or maybe not so interesting...) stuffs when we stumble across while researching. We recently revamped it a bit and added a iPhone plug-in. Those on iPhone or iPad should find it easier to read with the new format on their Apple devices. We are hoping to spend a bit more time on the blog sharing our findings and observation we made during fittings, testing or researching. Send us your feedback on what you think please.

Is it the equipment or me?

When Dan (not real name) visited us sometime back for a iron fitting session, he felt that he wasn't getting the rightful distance and consistency he should be getting. Upfront, he thought that the shaft was too flexible for him. He is nevertheless unsure if the problem is due to his inconsistency in his swing or due to equipment he use. Dan has a pretty sound and simple swing. Here is the Trackman statistic he gets with his current iron (see the second line in the report under '6i'). His current iron is a renowned Japanese forged iron with a 50+ grams graphite shaft.

A measurement of his club shows that the stiffness of his club was actually alright for this average swing speed with this club but contact on club face was little towards the heel. To determine if he is already getting his maximum potential, we put him through a series of tests with shafts of different weight and a quarter inch longer. We started with 95 grams shafts, 75 grams, 85 grams and then back to his old club, without tiring him too much. His Trackman statistic is shown in the diagram above under the line "Evo GS85R". Throughout the test, we use the same head and the same shaft length. This way, we are able to change the only variable which in this case, the shaft. Here's another graphical view of the ball flight.

Amazingly, with the 85grams shaft, he was swinging 2.7 mph faster, releasing the club better and hitting closer to the sweet spot of the club, smash factor increased from 1.35 to 1.37. Ball is also launching higher. Immediately, we see an increase of 20m carry without affecting the accuracy! In fact better consistency. This is even before fine-tuning the SW/MOI of the club.

We are sharing this case just to illustrate a point. The club is a system of components, matching every component is important. In this case, changing the shaft's properties (flex and weight) have a huge influence on the swing and when the club face meets the ball, translate to real result which you can see. So the next time when you swing inconsistently or not getting the result you are expecting, ask yourselves if the equipment is causing the inconsistency?

One belief we always stood by is great (enjoyable) golf is possible only with a positive mental attitude, a sound swing and properly fitted equipment. Mechanic produce the result, feel reproduce.
